“The past affects the present even without our being aware of it.”

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)

We all have some level of trauma, or a maladaptive response to stuck negative experiences. Trauma occurs when anything happens that overwhelms our nervous system’s ability to cope. Within any event, there is an experience made up of feelings, sensations, thoughts, and images. When we experience a traumatic event(s), our brain files the memory in a way that the experiences get stuck and become like a lens from which we perceive and interpret the world. They impact perception of ourselves, the world, and how we respond and/or react to it.

EMDR utilizes Bilateral Stimulation (movements/stimuli to activate both hemispheres of the brain) to create space between the disturbing material and the nervous system response. The BLS may look like eye movement or tapping in different ways that stimulate alternating sides of the body. By connecting with the experience of the event, BLS helps to reprocess disturbing or upsetting memories, feelings, perceptions, and beliefs, and increases ability to manage big feelings and negative symptoms. It helps the brain to re-file the memory appropriately, where it is no longer impacting us in the present. This structured and protocoled approach will assist us in helping you feel more confident and resilient, as well as being able to reprocess and move on in a healthy way.

Common Questions:

  1. Will I start EMDR right away?

Yes and no. The first phase of EMDR requires Preparation. This includes history-taking as well as ensuring the client has adequate emotional tolerance and regulation. As we develop our relationship, we will work together to build a set of resources so that when the time comes for Desensitization and reprocessing, you feel ready and safe.

  2. Will I have to re-live my traumatic experiences?

No! Re-experiencing does not mean re-living. We will “unpack” the memory to identify the main components of the experience, in a way that helps separate event from experience.

  3. How many sessions will it take once we begin the Trauma Protocol?

For some individuals, memories can be reprocessed in a few or handful of sessions. For others, it may take many. There are many factors that influence this, but what is most important is that you trust the process and your own brain and nervous system’s natural ability to heal.
